Newborns: The Instinctual Phase
Newborns, as you might already know, operate predominantly on instinct. They exhibit reflexive behaviors, such as turning toward a breast or bottle, not because they remember what’s coming, but because these actions are hardwired instincts. Similarly, they will naturally suck on a teat, nipple, or finger if it’s placed in their mouth. At this stage, their memory is primarily driven by these innate responses.
Beyond Instinct: Early Signs of Memory Development
As your baby grows, you’ll begin to notice subtle signs that their memory is evolving. For instance, their ability to form attachments to different caregivers indicates their capacity to remember familiar faces and voices. Even as early as 3-4 months, their preference for familiar faces over new ones suggests that they are starting to retain information from one day to the next.
You may also observe moments of recognition as they anticipate routine activities. A young baby might show excitement when you begin preparing their bottle or fiddle with your bra – clear signs that they have some understanding of what’s about to happen. This recognition of routines signifies their ability to recall past events.
The Emergence of Primary Attachments
Around the age of 6 months, babies often develop a strong understanding of their primary caregivers, typically Mum and Dad. They may even turn toward the source of familiar voices, indicating their recognition of loved ones. This stage might also mark the onset of separation anxiety as they become aware of familiar events, like Mum putting on her coat, signalling her departure. Retaining Early Memories: Short-Term vs. Long-Term Memory
Studies suggest that in the early stages of development, short-term memory precedes long-term memory. Observations of babies interacting with different people highlight this phenomenon. Babies are often more easily soothed by grandparents they see frequently compared to those they encounter less often.
A study conducted by Klein & Meltzoff in 1999 demonstrated that 12-month-olds could recall information for up to 4 weeks, with the majority of forgetting occurring within the first week. Babies tend to excel in recognition memory, which is stronger than recall memory. It’s worth noting that deferred imitation, where babies mimic an act days, weeks, or months later, can occur as early as the second half of their first year.
Even Longer-Term Memory: The Paradox of Infantile Amnesia
Remember that it’s challenging to determine how much early childhood experiences are truly remembered. Infants often mix genuine memories with beloved family stories. It’s widely considered impossible to recall events before the age of 3 or 4, a phenomenon known as “infantile amnesia.” Nevertheless, the events during this period profoundly influence early development and later life, even if they remain outside conscious memory.
How Memory Develops: From Brain Growth to Self-Concept
In the earliest stages of infancy, the brain isn’t developed enough to create long-term memories. It’s not until the hippocampus experiences a growth spurt over the first months that the capacity for long-term memory begins to emerge. However, this process is gradual, and a child’s memory may not rival that of an adult until around 7 or 8 years of age. Emerging evidence also suggests that memory retention is linked to a child’s development of self-awareness and language skills.
Types of Memory: Sensory, Short-Term, and Long-Term
There are three main types of memory: sensory, short-term, and long-term. Sensory memory retains information for a fraction of a second to a few seconds. Short-term memory holds information for about 20-30 seconds, while long-term memory can store information almost indefinitely. Long-term memories can be further divided into explicit (conscious) and implicit (unconscious) memories, covering facts, concepts, events, and skills.
All three types of memory are crucial for a child’s lifelong learning journey. For example, the process of language learning starts with sensory memory, as babies and toddlers hear sounds. Short-term memory then holds this information long enough to be transferred to the appropriate brain centres, initiating the journey toward long-term memory. Repetition plays a vital role in reinforcing this learning process.
