…PEEKABOO! The Importance of Peekaboo in Social Development
“Babies who laugh more, learn more.” Dr. Caspar Addyman
Research from Dr. Caspar Addyman (an expert in what makes babies laugh) shows that playing peekaboo is the scientifically proven funniest baby game! But peekaboo is much more than just a funny game of hiding and revealing; it plays a significant role in babies’ social development. Here are the key reasons why peekaboo is essential for your baby’s growth:
Social Bonding and Attachment: Peekaboo creates a unique opportunity for face-to-face interaction between babies and their caregivers. This game fosters a strong sense of attachment, trust, and security, strengthening the emotional bond between them. It allows babies to experience brief separations, helping them gradually cope with separation anxiety.
Turn-Taking and Communication Skills: Engaging in peekaboo introduces the concept of turn-taking, a fundamental aspect of communication. Babies learn to anticipate their turn to reveal and respond, laying the foundation for basic conversational skills. Eye contact, gestures, and non-verbal cues also come into play, enhancing communication and social interaction.
Object Permanence: Peekaboo helps babies understand object permanence—the concept that objects continue to exist even when hidden from view. As they experience the disappearance and reappearance of people or objects, babies develop a sense of predictability and continuity, supporting their cognitive growth.
Emotional Development: The element of surprise in peekaboo elicits joy and laughter, fostering positive emotional experiences. Babies learn to regulate their emotions, express happiness, and develop a sense of humour. The shared laughter during peekaboo strengthens the emotional connection between babies and caregivers.

A little about Babies Laugh at Peekaboo and Babies Laugh at Everything by Dr. Caspar Addyman (Campbell Books)
Dr. Caspar Addyman has created a series of books designed to enhance babies’ social development through fun and interactive reading experiences. These books provide caregivers with valuable resources to incorporate play and create joyful moments of laughter, connection and growth. Dr. Caspar Addyman’s research has shown that peekaboo is one of the best ways to make babies laugh, and the first book in the series, Babies Laugh at Peekaboo embraces the joy of this timeless game. While the grab-and-pull handles help to build the motor skills babies need to hit developmental milestones of grabbing and passing objects.
In conclusion, peekaboo is a powerful tool for promoting social development in babies. By incorporating this game into your daily routines, you can help foster social skills, emotional connections, cognitive abilities, attachment, and even help your babies cope with separation anxiety. Dr. Caspar Addyman’s books, with bright engaging illustrations by Ania Simeone will provide you with valuable resources to create interactive reading experiences, nurturing babies’ social and cognitive growth through laughter and positive emotions – and Babies Laugh at Peekaboo serves as a wonderful tool to practise the benefits of peekaboo.
